01Typical orders

What customers order most

Examples, not a closed list. The order goes to shops whose machines fit the size and material of your part.

01

Flanges and rings from thick plate

Steel and aluminium parts a laser cannot cut, or would cut with an overheated edge.

02

Base plates and fixtures

Thick plates for further CNC machining, cut close to size.

03

Seals and plastic shapes

POM-C, PA6 and other plastics that would melt under a laser.

04

Parts without a heat-affected zone

The material keeps its structure and hardness at the edge.

02What sets the price

What we look at in your part

Scroll to see what decides price and manufacturing. These are the same things the shop checks before accepting the order.

  1. 01 · 60 mm

    Plate thickness

Waterjet cuts plates where a laser stops making sense: steel up to 100 mm, aluminium up to 80 mm. Thickness matters a lot: a plate twice as thick takes more than twice as long.

  2. 02 · cold cut

    Edge without heat

Water with abrasive does not heat the material. The edge does not harden or change structure, so it is ready for further machining and welding.

  3. 03 · 6 × Ø18

    Holes and contour

As with laser, cut length and pierces count. Holes in thick plate have a slight taper, so finish fitted holes by milling.

  4. 04 · +1 mm allowance

    Machining allowance

If a dimension must fit, leave an allowance and order the milling too. Cutting close to size shortens milling time and lowers the price of the whole part.

60 mm

What drives the price

As with the laser: cutting length, pierces, thickness and material. Waterjet cutting is slower, so for thin sheets the laser is usually cheaper and for thick plates the waterjet.

05Questions

Waterjet cutting: frequently asked questions

When waterjet instead of laser?

When the plate is thick (over about 20 mm), the material must not heat up, or you are cutting plastics.

Will you cut a single piece?

Yes, with no minimum order.

Learn more about waterjet cutting

Waterjet cutting up to 100 mm

Waterjet cutting uses a jet of water with abrasive to cut steel, aluminium and plastics up to 100 mm thick. The material is not heated: no heat-affected zone, no discolouration and no melting of plastics.

Waterjet or laser?

For thin steel sheet, laser cutting is usually cheaper. Waterjet wins with thick plates, hardened or heat-sensitive materials and wherever the edge must stay unchanged. A comparison of all processes is on technologies.

Waterjet cutting from one piece

There is no minimum quantity. The order goes to a vetted shop with a waterjet suited to the plate size; payment, invoice and claims go through HexoParts. Plastic parts that need machining after cutting are covered on plastic CNC machining.
